RAC, our Regional Advisory Committee, recently took a field trip to Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. On August 10th, they carpooled from D’Youville College to the Mohawk College to take a tour of the Cummings Library and the Collaboratory. The Collaboratory is an innovative space where students, faculty and staff can collaborate on projects that blend learning with creativity. A variety of seating options are available for groups, as well as workstations with large screen monitors. During regular semesters, students can also come here for “Tech Talks,” 10-minute demos of various technology. You can learn more about the Collaboratory at http://collaboratory.mohawkcollege.ca
Commenting on the experience, D’Youville College librarian Celia White said: “I was very impressed by the flexibility and high level of technology at the Mohawk College Library. The students I observed seemed very comfortable using it, and the staff confident and helpful. Perhaps even more amazing was the obvious corporate branding and financing behind these elegant spaces (technology, fireplace, koi pond…)–not something commonly seen in academic libraries here.”
RAC members Celia White, Maureen McLaughlin and Chris Keough took many photos on the trip, showing the building’s unique features. You can view them all at http://www.flickr.com/groups/2038509@N24/pool/with/7784430180/#photo_7784430180.
