WNYLRC is pleased to announce that Olivia Helfer has accepted the hospital circuit librarian position for the Hospital Library Services Program. Olivia is a recent graduate of the University at Buffalo DLIS program and worked part-time previously at the Erie County Medical Center Library. She also worked as a youth services clerk for the public library in Farmington, New Mexico.
Olivia grew up in Illinois and New Mexico. She attended Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology. She maintains a strong interest in biology. Olivia enjoys playing card games such as nertz, golf, and casino, and she is a classically trained pianist from the age of six. Two of her favorite composers are Bach and Chopin. Olivia also likes to travel. Growing up, she traveled all around the US visiting National Parks with her family. Aside from her domestic travels, she has visited the Yucatan Peninsula, Slovakia, and has studied abroad in Costa Rica.
As part of her graduate studies, she completed a practicum for the Institute for Healthcare Informatics in helping to revise part of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, and she completed a separate practicum for the WNYLRC/HLSP. In addition to her practica, she also worked voluntarily for the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences collecting information for an ongoing ontology project.
Olivia replaced Janelle Toner who is now Digital Services Librarian for WNYLRC.
Olivia will be responsible for Sisters of Charity Hospital, Sisters Hospital – Saint Joseph campus, Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. She will also serve on the WNYLRC Committee for Health Information Access (CHIA) and serve on the advisory board of the Library Consortium of Healthcare Institutions in Buffalo (LCHIB- HUBNET).
