If you ask librarians you will surely be told that their library assistants are the linchpin to making the organization run smoothly and, without whom, most events sponsored by libraries would be unable to be pulled off. In recognizing these contributions, WNYLRC elevated the Library Assistants Task Group which was an off-shoot of our Continuing Education Committee to a standing committee on its own. The work of the Library Assistants Committee (WNYLA) is based on promoting communication and access to development to library assistants throughout our membership regardless of the title they hold in their organizations. The needed work this committee does and the varied outreach it provides would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of our Executive Director, Sheryl Knab. She spearheaded the motion to elevate the task group to full standing committee and has been instrumental in all its subsequent endeavors. To that end and because her support was so welcomed and recognized, the New York State Library Assistants’ Association Executive Council will award her the Ray Murray Award at their conference this Friday, June 10th. Ray Murray was a librarian who opened the door for the creation of the annual library assistants’ conference which laid the groundwork for NYSLAA. The Executive Council has chosen to recognize Sheryl for her contributions to the ongoing professional needs of library assistants to aid them in their part of a library’s mission. Congratulations, Sheryl, for this acknowledgement of your efforts!
